When I found Medium seven months ago, I found an avenue to share my thoughts with the world. I am an introvert. Medium provided a safe space for me to interact with others at my comfort level.

Those who know me well know my passion and first love is poetry. Prose challenges me to the point I have sleepless nights pondering over punctuation decisions.

When my friend William Spivey reached out to me about writing a piece for Black History Month I was honored, but apprehensive because of my love-hate relationship with prose.

Prose Panic

The topic of the Underground Railroad to Mexico was a perfect choice for me to write about because I love history! The process was a difficult road to traverse because the subject is not light-hearted. Compressing decades of history into around two thousand words is a little like putting Shaq into a Smart Car. I decided that if Shaq could do it, I could too!

The journey was just as I suspected it would be. There were sleepless nights, tears, constant emails, and a plaguing thought I would not be able to complete this piece.
